As with all models in the new C-Class range, the 220d features 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. This uses an integrated starter/generator that harnesses energy that is otherwise lost during braking, then hands it back to the system to boost efficiency under acceleration. You won't really notice any of that going on in the 220 d.
